Released in December 1983 on Roadster Records, their own label, Crystal Logic is Manilla Road’s third album. “`Country: United States
Style: Epic Metal
For fans of: Cirith Ungol, Omen, Battleroar
Here, the band leaves behind the space, prog, and hard rock elements of its first two albums and fully embraces heavy metal. The sound is lean yet epic, with riffs that build sweeping, narrative atmospheres. Shelton’s lyrics turn to mythology, magic, and ancient worlds. Formed in Wichita, Kansas, in the late 1970s, Manilla Road had already released two albums.
The record opens with “Prologue” and “Necropolis,” one of the band’s best-known songs. Highlights include the title track “Crystal Logic,” “The Riddle Master,” “The Veils of Negative Existence,” and the ten-minute “Dreams of Eschaton,” which closes the main set before “Epilogue.” “Feeling Free Again” and “The Ram” round out the album.
Crystal Logic is widely regarded as the album where Manilla Road found their sound, as well as a classic of American epic metal. It built a devoted following over the years and was included in Rock Hard magazine’s 2005 book of the 500 greatest rock and metal albums of all time. Mark Shelton remained the band’s driving force for decades, performing vocals and guitar on every track, and Crystal Logic became the defining reference point in their discography.
