Alice Cooper has said that his addiction in the early 1980s was so severe that he remembers almost nothing of the writing, the recording or the touring of three of his albums.
“`He spoke on 19 October at the Pavilion Theatre in Glasgow, as part of the British tour for his autobiography «Devil On My Shoulder». The conversation covered his road from Detroit to the stage and the period he himself describes as the lowest point of his life.
Those years coincide with the most turbulent phase of his career, when alcohol had taken control and the records came out at a pace he could not follow.
Cooper has spoken repeatedly about his stage persona as something that does not age, and he has ruled out retirement, as he explained in an earlier interview. In the same spirit came the recent appearance of guitarist Nita Strauss at his side, shortly after the birth of her son.
The book tour continued on 20 October at the Civic Hall in Wolverhampton.
The talk was moderated by the veteran journalist Billy Sloan, and footage shot by the audience appeared within hours. Cooper described how the dependence began and how fast it took hold in the first years, saying that at the time he believed he could do anything.
He did not name the three albums, but the period matches «Special Forces» (1981), «Zipper Catches Skin» (1982) and «DaDa» (1983). These are the years in which, by his own account, he remembers neither the writing nor the tours, only fragments.
In any case he says he would not change that period, because it taught him things about himself, and that since 1983 he has not felt the temptation once. «Devil On My Shoulder» was published on 8 October by Ebury in Britain.
