Craig Locicero says the new Forbidden album is not only thrash. The guitarist of the Bay Area band explained that their first album in 16 years moves just as much in heavy metal and prog, and that anyone expecting a straight thrash record will be surprised.
“`The self-titled album comes out on 23 October by BLKIIBLK, the metal label of Frontiers Label Group. It is Forbidden’s first release after «Omega Wave» of 2010, and the first with singer Norman Skinner, drummer Chris Kontos and guitarist Jeremy Von Epp in the line-up.
Speaking on the show «The Adventures Of Pipeman», Locicero remembered how Forbidden stood out inside the Bay Area scene of the 80s. The difference between the big bands of the time was, he says, obvious, but his own had taken another road. The biggest advantage was their first singer, Russ Anderson: he could do everything, and that opened the door for a sound as heavy metal as it was thrash.
«The new album is the same heavy metal, the same thrash and the same prog», he said. «We stretched out and embraced that we can do everything, and everybody contributed». Along the same lines he added that nothing is original, but everything is unique — like fingerprints, which look alike until you look at them closely.
About the comparison with the old records he took them one by one: he started writing «Forbidden Evil» of 1988 at 15 and they recorded it when he was 18, with no idea what they were doing. On «Twisted Into Form» of 1990 Tim Calvert joined the band and the two of them worked the way a guitar duo should work. «Distortion» (1994) and «Green» (1997) were written in years when thrash interested almost nobody, mainly for themselves, while on «Omega Wave» of 2010 he came in on a mission.
