REVIEW | Metal Territory

Viande return with Monument Aux Mortes and deliver one of the most suffocating, dark and psychologically charged records of the year. Four years after their debut, the band from France appears heavier, more demonic and more atmospheric than ever, building a world full of terror, menace and spiritual decay.

Their sound is a blend of doom-dissolved blackened death, with dissonant passages, martial rhythms and a sense that every riff is made to crush you. The vocals move between abyssal growls and tormented screams, creating an atmosphere that recalls catacombs full of lost souls. Their music seems chaotic, but in reality it is completely controlled — a ritual immersion into darkness.

“Monolithe de Chagrin”, one of the most direct and death-metal-centred tracks of the record, works as a devastating pulse at the end of the first side. After a series of longer, twisting compositions, the track arrives like a sudden blow, showing how far Viande have evolved their sound. It is one of the moments where the band proves it can be equally effective in slow, doom-drowned dissolution and in direct, violent assault.

Monument Aux Mortes is not a record for faint hearts. It is an experience that pulls you into a dark, suffocating universe and leaves you there until it ends. When the curtain falls, you feel as if you have emerged from an underground catacomb, with the screams of the dead still echoing in your head.

Viande deliver a record that stands comfortably alongside names like Grave Miasma, Abyssal and Ignivomous. Dark, menacing and utterly atmospheric — one of the strongest extreme metal albums of 2026.
