Tony Iommi says writing and recording new music keeps him moving at 78, the same way it helped him during cancer treatment around the time of Black Sabbath’s last album.

He spoke to Krishnan Guru-Murthy on Channel 4 News’ «Ways To Change The World» podcast about «From The Dark», his first solo album since «Fused» in 2005. The record arrived on 23 October through BMG, with Jørn Lande co-writing everything on vocals, plus bassist Becky Baldwin and drummer Karl Brazil.

Asked whether the awareness of mortality drives him or he simply carries on because it is all he knows, he answered: «I still wonder when I’m going to fall down. Yes, I do. But I enjoy creating and that keeps me going».

He went back to the «13» period: when he was diagnosed with lymphoma in January 2012 he asked to keep working so he would not sit and think about the illness — «I was working, flying to Los Angeles to record, coming back for treatment and back again. It helped me a lot».

«From The Dark» was introduced with a lyric video for «Over The Violent Sun» — we covered that here — while Iommi has also talked about his part on William Shatner’s metal album: another unlikely collaboration. Becky Baldwin, who plays with him, has just put out a video of her own.
