The band started around 2012 with guitarist Stuart West (formerly of Obelyskkh), built on doom, sludge and death metal. As a trio back then, they put out their first album «Usurper of the Oaken Throne» (2019), a record with a fantasy theme, long tracks and a heavy sound. The line-up then grew, and so did their sound: «Kingslayer» (2023) showed Kat Shevil’s voice in fine form and shorter, wilder tracks.
On «Slay Kill Erase» Thronehammer move in that direction, with more epic doom and sludge weight, but also more pronounced death metal elements than in any previous work of theirs, along with post-metal passages. The title track that opens the album is built on a heavy, enraged riff and growl vocals, to close with clean singing. Also standing out are «Blade to the Heart», «To Never Return», «Rise of Resistance» — the album’s first single — and «Destroyer ov Light», while the record closes with «Onwards to Oblivion», which features Max Hemmann.
