Worm Altar – Pillars of Eternal Dusk | Metal Territory

«Pillars of Eternal Dusk» is the first full-length album from Worm Altar out of Portland, Maine, and it lands on October 16, 2026 via Dawnbreed Records and Gurgling Gore. The band started in 2021 as a solo project by Scott M. and is now a proper band, with a sound written in the old school of atmospheric death/doom. The record comes out on LP, 300 copies, and CD, 400, while the cassette is a joint release by Gurgling Gore and Contemn Light in two color variants.

«Virescent Fire» sits in the middle of the record and shows both sides of the band: the heavy momentum and the grooves that hold on from doom and sludge. They themselves say the song takes the listener through six minutes of crushing tempos, dripping guitars and otherworldly vocals, and that at the end the layers of grime open up for a close with a haunted, majestic melody.

It all started in late 2021, when Scott M. (guitar, vocals) was working on the project on his own. The «Demo 2022» cassette came out on Acid Redux Productions and the EP «Astral Scourge» in 2023 on Gurgling Gore together with Total Death Over Mexico. When the outfit became a proper band, John S. came in on drums, Jon M. on bass, who also plays with sludge/doom veterans Come To Grief, and Rob C. of Shabti on second guitar.

The record was recorded almost live, in ten hours, with Todd Hutchisen at Acadia Recording Company in their hometown. Ethan Camp handled the mix and Dan Lowndes the mastering. The six tracks run around 33 minutes.

Their sound polishes nothing. There’s something repellent in the way Worm Altar sound: raw, harsh, as if pulled from a damp corner of the underground, with riffs crawling out of the filth and staying in your head. Underneath it all hide details that add depth, without easing the sense that something is going wrong.

After the release, Worm Altar will play cities across New England and Canada, bringing the filthy sound of «Pillars of Eternal Dusk» to the stage.

Our take

The album rests on atmosphere, not force. The grit of the production isn’t an end in itself: it works as a vehicle for music that wants to sound uncomfortable and to crawl. Worm Altar win mostly with their riffs, which rise out of the mass of sound and become recognizable, and with the passages that don’t suffocate you but open up the space when needed.

They don’t hide where they come from, but they don’t stay in imitation either. For a first full-length, recorded in ten hours, it holds a steady level from start to finish and shows a band with a clear idea of its sound.
