- For fans of: Symphony X, Ayreon, soundtrack-based fantasy scores
Awakenings shows from the very first moment that it does not aim at displaying technique or speed. It is a record that works as a single narrative, with symphonic layers, progressive structure and a strong cinematic mood. Lampros Marantos combines metal, orchestral and ethnic elements in a natural way, while Bob Katsionis’s production gives clarity and volume without blurring the details.
The album builds its ideas slowly, investing in melody and atmosphere. Most of the compositions are instrumental, something that allows the guitars, the keyboards and the symphonic orchestrations to take on the role of the narrative. “Lust For Freedom” works as an ideal introduction, presenting the style of the record: powerful guitars, symphonic layers and a sense of adventure.
In “Source Of Life” the guitar leads the composition with a clear melodic line, while “Cry Of Lucifer” works more as an atmospheric interlude. “Fractal Of Loss” is one of the most mature moments of the record, with beautiful dynamic shifts and a proper climax. Here Marantos’s ability to hold interest without vocals becomes clearly apparent.
“The Promise” is the emotional centre of the album. With vocals by Vasilis Marantos, the composition starts calmly and rises gradually through symphonic lines and guitar climaxes. It is the track that gives a human dimension to the record and stays in the memory.
“Ishtar” brings oriental influences to the fore, adding ethnic colour without excess. “Radical Revolution” closes the record with more intensity and a progressive character, leaving the sense of a complete journey.
Coherence is the greatest advantage of Awakenings. Despite the different influences, everything ties together organically. The transitions have a reason to exist, the themes return naturally and the production highlights every detail. Some might have wanted more riffs or vocals, but the album’s goal is clear: atmosphere, melody and emotional evolution.
Awakenings is a mature debut that shows Innerverse have a clear creative identity and can evolve into one of the most interesting Greek names of symphonic progressive metal.
