The Romanian black metal scene may not always be in the spotlight, but it has bands that invest in atmosphere and in creating a complete artistic world. NocturN, with more than two decades of presence, continue to follow their own path, presenting “The Conjuring”, the second chapter of the story that began with Thrones of Deception. This is not simply another collection of songs, but a continuation of a concept in which the Architect attempts to summon Malphas, the Prince of Hell, leading the narrative down even darker paths.
From the first seconds of the intro “Entrance”, the album creates a ceremonial feel that works as a gate to what follows. NocturN don’t pursue speed for show, nor do they fill the compositions with unnecessary technical displays. Instead, they invest in creating a suffocating atmosphere, where distorted riffs, icy tremolos, relentless blast beats and harsh vocals coexist with melodic passages that lend depth without weakening the music’s raw character.
The production stays balanced, avoiding the excessive cleanliness that often strips black metal of its dark charm. Every instrument keeps its space in the mix, while the overall sonic approach perfectly serves the occult and cinematic style of the concept.
Standouts naturally include the title track “The Conjuring”, which is the heart of the album, the imposing “The Architect’s Shrine”, where the narrative peaks through shifts in intensity and atmosphere, and “Stones and Bones”, one of the album’s most complete tracks, in which the band balances ideally between raw aggression and melancholic black metal aesthetics. Special mention is also due to “Prophet of the Void”, which is reinforced by guest vocal contributions, adding even greater theatricality to the narrative.
What makes The Conjuring stand out is not some attempt to renew black metal. NocturN stay true to the genre’s roots, choosing to invest in coherence and atmospheric storytelling instead of easy thrills. The result is an album that demands the listener’s attention and rewards those who hear it in full, since each composition works as a piece of a larger ritual.
The Conjuring proves that NocturN continue to evolve their personal vision without betraying their character. It’s a work aimed mainly at fans of atmospheric and traditional black metal, but also at those seeking concept albums with substance and a cinematic approach.
