The sound is doom metal with heavy, slow riffs and Christian lyrics about faith, sin and redemption. The two guitars give a dense, warm sound and Wagner sings with passion, with a feel that recalls a preacher. The sound recalls Black Sabbath, with whom Trouble were often compared. The guitars of Franklin and Wartell give the album a warm, full sound.

Standing out are «The Misery Shows», «On Borrowed Time» and «Run to the Light». «The Beginning» stands out for the Hammond organ, which adds a different, more melodic shade, while «Peace of Mind» gives a calmer moment. «Born in a Prison» and «Tuesday’s Child» give more strong points.

The album was recorded in March 1987 in Chicago and was the first with Ron Holzner on bass and the only one with Dennis Lesh on drums. On the tour for the album the drums were played by Ted Kirkpatrick, who founded Tourniquet.

It was the band’s last album on Metal Blade and remained a reference point of American doom. In 2023 it was released again in an anniversary edition with additional tracks, among them a cover of «Come Together». The album became a reference point for the Christian side of doom.
