Warthrash from Colombia have been around since 2005 and return with their second full-length, “No Light Shall Remain”, twelve years after their debut. And here they don’t waste time. The record opens with the title instrumental, with acoustic guitars that slowly grow, before making way for “Culebras Sin Honor”.
From there on we have Death/Thrash Metal with plenty of groove. The guitars go from fast tremolo riffs and blast beats to heavy, bouncy riffs that make you nod your head. There are also palm-muted passages, strong chugs and darker harmonies that give the record a wilder side.
The good thing is that Warthrash don’t stay at full speed the whole time. They slow down the pace, add more doom passages and then come back in with force. The breakdowns are heavy, while the dive bombs on the guitars add that old-school touch that fits their style perfectly.
On “Wounds” a more melodic side also appears, with a dark tremolo theme opening the song and returning later. There are plenty of such small touches throughout the record, with melodic harmonies, guitar solos and some more atmospheric points without ever losing the weight.
But if I have to single out one track, it is “Abismo Sin Retorno”. It has everything that makes the album work: groovy riffs, tremolo harmonies, more doom points and a very good solo, with melody, atmosphere, tapping and a bit of shredding. There is even a riff that brings Darkened to mind, especially their more aggressive side.
The drums also do their job properly, with strong grooves and plenty of speed when needed. At intervals the bass also comes more forward, while the solos aren’t always confined to one point of the song and often return for a second strike.
“No Light Shall Remain” is one of those records that don’t need much explanation. It is heavy, fast, groovy and has enough melody not to become monotonous. If you like Death/Thrash that makes you want to headbang from the first riff and jump into a mosh pit, Warthrash have something very strong here.
