The The Shadows Of Ithaca are an outfit from Kavala that brings together two different musical paths: Aggelos Kalogrias, a singer with a blues feel, and Panos Roumeliotis, a guitarist who had been through the epic metal of Elwing. Their debut, «Hunt The Hunter», was released in July 2023 on digipak and digitally, independently, and it looks to the hard rock and heavy metal of the 80s without sounding like a period copy.

The listen
«Mr. Incredible» opens the album and sets the tone: lyrics about glory, money and recognition that come easily, as long as you accept the price. Right after comes the cover of The Guess Who’s «American Woman» — more aggressive and headlong than the original — and «Above The Water» keeps the same intensity. From there on the album changes pace: «Blue Cold Cell» and «Now That The Buffalo Has Gone» tread more heavily, the title track «Hunt The Hunter» keeps the mood up and the closer «In Basements and Attics» stretches out for eight minutes, with the solos always carrying that blues tinge that characterises the whole album.
Seven tracks, 45 minutes, with the two of them having written the music and the lyrics and Kalogrias on vocals and Roumeliotis on guitars. Alongside the album there are official videos, lyric videos and guitar playthroughs, while t-shirts with the album cover were also released.

It is an album that doesn’t chase trends: riffs, melodies and vocal lines that will remind older listeners why we loved this music, and younger ones that the old sound can stand perfectly well today too. It deserves a full listen, in order.
