«The Sourceless Scourge» is the second album by Odious Spirit, the project of James Oskarbski from the USA, and it came out on 9 October 2026 via I, Voidhanger Records.
“`Country: USA
Style: Technical death metal, progressive death metal, avant-garde metal
For fans of: Krallice, Blut Aus Nord, Voivod, Imperial Triumphant, Car Bomb
Oskarbski plays guitar and sings, with Jason Bursese on drums, while the bass is handled by Cullen Gallagher. The production is by Kevin Bersten and the artwork by Jari Anttonen.
The sound is built on a small motif that repeats and changes slowly. Each track often opens with a lone guitar — or piano — playing fast, insistent arpeggios, and on top of that come other guitars, bass, piano, sometimes brass or strings, as on «Close to the Sun». The lines move in parallel and then diverge, as if they were arguing with each other.
Bursese’s drums hold the pulse in 4/4 with constant blast beats, and they are what gives the album its backbone when the guitars start to drift. On «Void Without End» the track opens with a more conventional death metal riff, moves into a dissonant lead, speeds up, and after about four minutes opens into a death/doom intermission before closing with a repeat on piano and guitar.
The structure is almost the same across the record: the motif grows, gets tangled and finally collapses into itself. The production keeps every layer clear and spreads them across the channels, so that each line stands out. «The Betrayer’s Will» is the track where dissonance sits on top of regular riffs and the structure holds more steadily.
The album moves between technical and progressive death metal, with blackened thrash passages, dissonance and atmospheres that come close to doom. It is music made for listeners looking for the sound of Krallice, Voivod and Imperial Triumphant, with material that asks for patience and headphones.
