“`Country: Germany
Genre: Black Metal
For fans of: Absurd, Lunar Aurora, Moonblood
The line-up is Jander on vocals, Zorn on guitar, Sveinn on bass and Alexander von Meilenwald on drums and keyboards. Meilenwald also played bass on «Seelenland».
The sound joins northern black metal with a more rhythmic way of playing and influences from German thrash. The production by Andy Classen, who had never worked with black metal before, gave a sound that was heavy and clean for the standards of the genre.
Nagelfar themselves believed that with this album they put distance between themselves and the Scandinavian sound, since it did not sound like the black metal of the time. The vocals alternate between screams and clean singing.
The tracks are long, with «Schwanengesang» reaching fourteen minutes and «Der Flug des Raben» fourteen as well. The album has seven tracks and a short intro.
What stands out: «Seelenland», «Schwanengesang», the title track «Hünengrab im Herbst» and «Der Flug des Raben».
The lyrics revolve around mythology and the depths of the human psyche. The album is considered one of the most important of the German black metal scene and it has appeared in lists of the genre’s finest records.
After this album Nagelfar released two more, «Srontgorrth» and «Virus West», before breaking up in the early 2000s. Meilenwald went on with The Ruins of Beverast.
The record opens with a short intro and then goes straight into «Seelenland», showing from the very start the heavy, slow atmosphere that dominates it.
