Elder are now one of the most important and influential acts in the contemporary heavy psych and progressive rock sound. Starting out in the underground stoner/doom scene of Massachusetts and now based in Berlin, the band has traced an impressive evolutionary path. Their new album, “Through Zero”, continues their musical exploration into expansive, multi-layered soundscapes. With their characteristic intricate guitar melodies, extensive use of keyboards and atmospheric passages, the band builds compositions that take the listener on a journey, while maintaining the solid, heavy character that established them.

REVIEW : Anyone who has followed Elder’s path all these years knows well that Nick DiSalvo and his crew stubbornly refuse to stand still. “Through Zero” is yet another proof of what great musicians they are. Listening to the album, I find that the band has perfected that progressive/psych sound it began building back in the days of “Lore” and “Reflections of a Floating World”, leaving its purely stoner roots well behind.
The compositions are enormous, packed with multi-layered guitars and synths that create an almost cosmic atmosphere. The way the tracks are built is masterful – they start out relaxed, hypnotize you, and then erupt into massive riffs that pin you in place. Some older fans who are looking exclusively for the rawness of “Dead Roots Stirring” might find it overly “progressive”, but personally I think the band is at its absolute creative maturity. The album flows incredibly beautifully and is yet another flawless addition to their already stunning discography.
