REVIEW : When you put on a new Defect Designer record, you know in advance that this is not going to be an easy listen. “Depressants” is exactly that controlled chaos you expect from them. From the very first moment, the album grabs you by the throat with its labyrinthine riffs and constant tempo changes. There are no compromises here. Their technical proficiency is blinding, but fortunately it is not spent on pointless showmanship. Instead, it serves an utterly sick and aggressive atmosphere, one with clear roots in old-school death/grind, yet filtered through a modern, progressive prism.

What personally won me over is the energy the album gives off. It doesn’t let you catch your breath. Just when you think you’ve locked into the groove, the track twists sharply and leaves you scrambling. For the average listener this constant complexity might feel a little chaotic, or even exhausting, but for those who like their technical death metal unconventional and “dirty”, “Depressants” hits the bullseye. It’s a release that demands multiple listens to decipher everything that’s going on, but it rewards you to the fullest.
