«None So Vile» is Canadian band Cryptopsy’s second album and it was released on 3 July 1996 by Wrong Again. It was recorded from December 1995 to January 1996 at Studio Victor in Montreal, with Pierre Rémillard and the band producing. The line-up is Lord Worm on vocals, Jon Levasseur on guitar, Eric Langlois on bass and keyboards and Flo Mounier on drums.
“`Country: Canada
Style: Brutal Death Metal
For fans of: Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse, Gorguts
It is the first album with bassist Eric Langlois and the last with singer Lord Worm, until his return in 2005.
The sound is technical and brutal at once: down-tuned guitars, complex time signatures, dissonance and fast solos, with deep growls and screams. Lord Worm’s vocals are deliberately unintelligible, with the man himself cutting syllables short. The album runs just 32 minutes and has been compared to two albums playing at the same time.
«Phobophile» opens with piano and comes close to classical music, while some tracks borrow elements from thrash. The lyrics revolve around violence, blasphemy, blood and the occult.
«Crown of Horns», «Slit Your Guts» and «Phobophile» stand out.
The cover is an inverted painting by the Italian painter Elisabetta Sirani, «Herodias with the Head of John the Baptist». The big scream on «Crown of Horns» came from drummer Flo Mounier, not from the singer.
The album became a cult record and is considered a classic of the genre. In 2012 it came out again on vinyl, while the technical death metal scene in Quebec, with bands such as Neuraxis, was built on this sound. Decibel put it at number 10 on its list of the 100 best death metal albums of all time.
