«Unquestionable Presence» is the second album by Atheist and it was released in 1991 by Active Records. The band from Florida was among the first to marry death metal with progressive and jazz, and here it reached its most complete form. The line-up is Kelly Shaefer on vocals and guitar, Rand Burkey on guitar and Steve Flynn on drums.
“`Country: USA
Genre: Technical Death Metal
For fans of: Death, Cynic, Pestilence
The album rests on a paradox: it is at once chaotic and perfectly structured. Every track keeps one basic riff and transforms it constantly, from the first seconds to the end. Shaefer’s vocals have a raspy, recognisable style, the bass is clearly audible and Steve Flynn’s drums combine speed with technique, without ever losing the groove.
What stands out: «Mother Man», which opens the album, the title track «Unquestionable Presence» and «An Incarnation’s Dream», where there is also an acoustic passage. The short solos and the bass passages are not missing either, and they give each track a character of its own.
Behind the complexity hides another secret: the album has real compositions and not just a display of speed. Every track has a beginning, a middle and an end, with passages that return and build a sense of direction. It is this combination of technique and structure that sets Atheist apart from the many bands of the genre that simply tried to play faster.
«Unquestionable Presence» is considered one of the first technical death metal albums and one of the most important of the genre. Many bands that came later took their style from here, and the record remains to this day a reference point for the Florida sound.
