Carcass are an English extreme music band and «Necroticism – Descanting The Insalubrious» is their third album, released in October 1991 by Earache Records. The recording was done in 1991 at Amazon Studios in Lancashire, with Colin Richardson producing. It is their first work with guitarist Michael Amott and the first they recorded as a four-piece.

Here Carcass move away from the goregrind of their first records and head decisively toward death metal. The songs become longer and more complex in structure, with tempo changes and technical passages that come close to technical death metal, without losing their dirty, rotting character.

«Corporal Jigsore Quandary» is the landmark track, with heavy riffs and a catchy chorus, and «Incarnated Solvent Abuse» shows how fast the band can run without blurring. «Inpropagation» and «Forensic Clinicism/The Sanguine Article» also stand out, while the lyrics deal with methods of disposing of corpses — in the style that made the band famous.

The line-up is Bill Steer on guitar, Jeff Walker on bass and vocals, Michael Amott on guitar and Ken Owen on drums. The album is seen as the link between their grindcore past and the more melodic «Heartwork» that followed, and for that it holds a special place in the history of death metal.

Colin Richardson’s production is cleaner than before without taking away the weight, and Ken Owen’s drums sound better than ever. The release on Earache showed that British death metal could stand beside the American scene, with a face and a sound of its own.
