Obituary bassist Terry Butler says the band has started discussing new material, but there is still no date for the next album.

Speaking to «Reckless» Rexx Ruger on the «Pod Scum» show, Butler explained that they plan to exchange ideas soon, without any specific timetable. «I don’t have a calendar and I can’t pinpoint a time», he said, according to Blabbermouth’s transcript. «But we’ve talked about potentially throwing around some ideas real soon. We haven’t said “by this date we want this many songs” or “that’s when we go into the studio”. It comes as it comes. We do know we need to have something soon».

Butler explained that the long gaps between albums show how the music industry works now, since bands make most of their income from touring. «It used to be the label pushed harder for a timetable. Today you don’t sell as much product, obviously because of piracy and Spotify. So you put out a record, you tour twice in the US, twice in Europe, you play some festivals, you go to South America, maybe Asia — and two or three years go by», he said.

He also stressed that the appetite for new music remains. «We have over ten albums, that’s 140 songs to choose from, and we play about 15 live, so there’s material. But the flame is definitely still there and we want to write new songs».

These comments are less specific than those from July 2025, when Butler had said a new album could come in 2026 or 2027. Since then singer John Tardy said in January that the band hoped to gather ideas during the year, with a possible release in 2027, while drummer Donald Tardy had said that 2026 and 2027 would go into writing and recording. «Dying Of Everything» from January 2023 on Relapse Records was their eleventh album and the first after the self-titled 2017 one. The band formed in the Tampa area in the 1980s and put out their debut «Slowly We Rot» in 1989, while before Obituary Butler played bass in Death, Massacre and Six Feet Under.
