Journey drummer Deen Castronovo played a full show with the band at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas on 10 October, two days after he was taken to hospital in the middle of Journey’s set in Tulsa.
“`The Incident in Tulsa
Castronovo left the stage two songs into the 8 October show at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma and the concert stopped. Jonathan Cain asked the crowd to keep the drummer in their prayers and about ten minutes later Neal Schon came back on stage to say he had been taken to hospital. The band finished the night with drum tech Steve Toomey behind the kit. The nature of the health problem has not been made known.
The Return in San Antonio
According to Setlist.fm, Castronovo sang on «Lights», «Keep On Runnin’» and «Precious Time», and shared vocals with Cain on «Just The Same Way» and «Anytime». Before the show he had thanked people on Facebook for their support over the previous days, apologised to the Tulsa crowd for not being able to finish that concert, and thanked his bandmates and the BOK Center for «holding him up» with their prayers that night.
Schon had announced his return beforehand, saying the drummer was fine and asking people to come and welcome him. After the San Antonio show, replying to a fan on Facebook early on 11 October, he wrote that he «killed it» the night before, while in a separate post on X he noted that Castronovo was «in form we had not seen in a long time».
The Final Frontier Tour
The shows are part of the farewell «Final Frontier» tour, which began on 28 February in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The current leg opened on 12 September in Los Angeles and ends on 28 November at the Chase Center in San Francisco.
Journey’s line-up features Schon and Cain, singer Arnel Pineda, Castronovo, bassist Todd Jensen and keyboardist Jason Derlatka. Castronovo returned to the band in July 2021, six years after leaving in 2015, and has been its only drummer since Narada Michael Walden departed in 2022.
