Mystical Death appeared in 2024 with the Carnation EP and have been moving on a steady upward path since. Across is their first full-length and shows clearly that the band has its own character, its own style and a unified creative direction. All the music, the production, the lyrics and the artwork are the work of Mystic, something that gives the album coherence and personality.
The opening with “Apophenia” immediately puts the listener in the mood: death metal foundations, tight guitars, intense vocal attack and then a sudden dissolution of structure where the instruments move independently, as if exploring space that did not exist before. The track returns abruptly to the initial motif, creating a sense of constant motion.
“Laniakea” changes the atmosphere completely, with different scales and a flow that constantly transforms. “Empathy” is one of the most distinctive moments of the record: it combines jazz passages, clean melodies, saxophone and brutal death metal without losing its coherence. Mystical Death have the ability to fit many elements into short durations, without it becoming chaotic or tiring.
“Thalassa” builds an entire world within a few minutes, with changes in meter and different vocal approaches. “Kurtosis” is more direct and explosive, while “Sanctus” closes the record with a classical, almost ritual mood that works as an epilogue.
Across remains faithful to its death metal roots, but at the same time opens new paths. It does not try to impress with excesses; instead, it presents a clear, focused idea of how progressive/technical death metal can evolve without losing its essence. It is an album with character, imagination and a clear artistic identity.
