Eaten By Sharks return with The Undertow of Hate, an album that dives straight into the deep end without unnecessary intros. “Vessels Torn” opens with a guitar line that starts adventurously and ends up wild, like a submarine descending into dark waters. From there on, the album moves with mid‑tempo death metal, full of thrashing riffs, arpeggiated runs and steady groove that makes you bang your neck without a second thought.
Matt Sherriff has vocals that sound clear and understandable, something rare for the field. He doesn’t choose the “machine‑gun” approach found in bands like Archspire; instead, he locks in with the band’s groove, working as part of a single whole. This gives the album tracks with truly catchy vocal lines — “Capsized”, “Treading Water”, “Crimson Tide”.
Although the shark concept could easily become a gimmick, Eaten By Sharks don’t fall into that trap. The Undertow of Hate isn’t treated like a meme; it’s serious, sturdy and made with respect for the genre. It doesn’t try to become something overly complex or “high art”, but it isn’t Dethklok‑style goofing around either. It sits exactly in the middle: extreme music that knows what it’s doing and doesn’t need to apologize for its style.
The album doesn’t reinvent the wheel — and it doesn’t need to. Just as sharks have remained almost unchanged for millions of years, Eaten By Sharks choose to rely on what works: tight composition, powerful execution and vocals that put you in the mood. The result is an album that’s reliable, fun and full of energy, and it will easily find a place in the playlists of those who love the modern deathcore/tech‑death sound.
