Abyssal Rift return with their second full-length, “Relics of Great Ash”, and continue to weave Death Metal with dark atmosphere, Doom, psychedelic passages and more experimental moments.
“Consummate Design” opens the record with heavy riffs and old-school Death Metal logic, before the shifts to slower and darker points begin. The title track “Relics of Great Ash” moves even slower, with feedback, ominous guitars and a strong Doom feel. Here the band lets the intensity build instead of constantly going full throttle.
In “The Death of God” things get wild, with tremolo riffs, blast beats and a more aggressive Black/Death sound. There are plenty of shifts within the tracks, but Abyssal Rift always keep Death Metal as the base.
The big interest comes in “Sphere of Perpetuity”, the record’s last track. Here the band moves more toward psychedelic Death/Doom, with slow build-up and a much sicker atmosphere. It differs from the other tracks and shows a direction that could be developed even further.
“Relics of Great Ash” is not a record that tries to reinvent Death Metal. What it does well is take the familiar cavernous and old-school foundations and fill them with atmosphere, Doom and psychedelic passages. Dark, heavy and quite distinctive for those who want their Death Metal a bit stranger.
