SWR Barroselas Metalfest is one of the oldest extreme festivals in Europe — it has run without a break since 1998 — and this year it takes place from 29 April to 2 May 2027 in Barroselas, a village on the northern coast of Portugal. The first announcement wave brings 20 names, among them Sabbat, Sarcófago (through The Laws), Bølzer, Metalucifer, Hexvessel and Phrenelith.

Which airport works for you
Barroselas is about 80 kilometres north of Porto, according to the organisers. Francisco Sá Carneiro airport (OPO) is roughly 59 kilometres away — around 50 minutes by car — and from central Porto the drive is about 73 kilometres. From Athens and Thessaloniki you fly to Porto, usually with one connection, and continue by road or rail to Barroselas.

Where to stay
Viana do Castelo, about 25 kilometres away, is the close option, with hotels by the sea. Porto offers the widest choice and the city life, but you will drive roughly an hour every day.
Camping
The festival has free camping inside the forest, right next to the site — one of the main reasons SWR has such a devoted audience. The grounds hold two stages, both covered, that alternate, along with a metal market, a food area and a café. Details on the camping and its rules are on the official page.
What else to know
Both stages are indoor and alternate, so you never miss a band to an overlap — and you never get rained on either. The region is known for its Atlantic beaches and its seafood, so a couple of extra days around the festival works easily.
Practical information
- 2027 prices: three-day ticket 100 euros until 22 March 2027 and 110 after that; one-day 45 euros (50 afterwards); the X-Mas pack with a three-day ticket, t-shirt, mug and bag costs 95 euros.
