Jay Weinberg: He no longer looks for an explanation for his departure from Slipknot | Metal Territory

Jay Weinberg says he no longer needs an explanation for his departure from Slipknot and that he had to find a way to make peace with it on his own, with the help of a psychologist and his friends. He said this in a video interview with Frank Godla of Metal Injection.

Slipknot announced in November 2023 that they were parting ways with Weinberg, who had joined the band in 2014 in Joey Jordison’s place. In earlier statements he had said he was only told it was a creative decision. In 2024 the spot behind the drums went to Eloy Casagrande, former drummer of Sepultura.

He describes that the news came at the same moment he was preparing for a surgery he had put off for years: he had a bone growth on his femur and knew the recovery would take five to six months. In the end he had surgery in November 2023, for a torn labrum in his left hip and to correct part of the femur. Suddenly he found himself on the couch with nowhere to go, as he says, unable to walk for two months, and he had to rebuild both his body and his mindset.

During that recovery, before he could even walk again, he got a call from Suicidal Tendencies: Mike Muir asked him to play drums with them. Weinberg says he accepted immediately, because bands like Suicidal Tendencies give him what he needs to get back up, and that call was his motivation. He joined the band in March 2024 and toured with them for almost two years, with dates also on Metallica’s “M72 World Tour”, until he left in January 2026 to focus on the arrival of his child and his own music.

Over the past year he has released songs under his own name with guests. Among them “Sandstone” with George Clarke of Deafheaven, in November 2025, and “Drone Operator” with Nowhere2Run, the project of Jami Morgan and Eric Balderose of Code Orange, in March 2026. He has also worked on a song with Soft Cult, while the collaborations are slowly gathering into an album, without him talking about a personal band. He also played drums on “The Ringing Bell” by Fuming Mouth, which came out in July. Ten years devoted to one band leave a mark, he says, and now he keeps the good sides of that era.
