Mactätus, hailing from the Telemark region, left their own distinctive mark in the late ’90s. “Blot”, their debut album, is a prime example of the golden age of Norwegian extreme sound. The band manages to create a frozen, dark atmosphere, built on aggressive tempo, razor-sharp riffs and the extensive, but targeted, use of keyboards. The end result is a musical work that breathes pure Scandinavian aesthetics, taking the listener to snowy landscapes and dense forests.

If you ask me about the true, hidden diamonds of the second generation of Norwegian Black Metal, “Blot” will certainly be among my top picks. Listening to the record again, I feel exactly that late-90s chill. The way the band manages to balance the rawness of the production with the symphonic melodies is truly a masterclass. The strong presence of the keyboards gives a majestic and melancholic texture that, to my ears, stands proudly alongside the early legendary works of giants of the idiom, without ever feeling like a sterile imitation.

They may never have reached the top in terms of sales like some of their countrymen, but personally I take my hat off to them for their authenticity. Their choice to keep the lyrics exclusively in Norwegian makes the end result even more pagan and otherworldly. Overall, we’re talking about an honest, quality effort that deserves the absolute respect of all of us who enjoy digging deep into the roots of this scene.
