Port Noir, the musical trio from Sweden, return with their new full-length release “The Dark We Keep”. The band, which in the past moved in more electro-rock paths, here makes a clear turn toward modern Djent and the broader Progressive Metal. Their approach marries heavy, polyrhythmic riffs with clean, atmospheric vocals and pop sensibilities, following the current trends of modern heavy sound. Within the compositions we find moments with electro touches, but also some abrupt bursts that “wink” at the extreme Scandinavian sound, maintaining a dark, melancholic character.

REVIEW : If you ask me, the excessive turn that many bands have taken lately toward the pop-djent path is starting to get tiring, and “The Dark We Keep” unfortunately falls right into that trap. The Swedes decided to follow the safe, modern recipe of acts like Sleep Token, leaving aside quite a few of the elements that made them interesting. Although on vocals there’s an attempt to bring out a Deftones-type atmosphere, the production – which the band itself took on – sounds overly flat. The vocal lines are often buried behind the instruments, creating a result that seems not to breathe.

For most of the album, the compositions recycle the same formula: massive riffs and melancholic melodies repeated without much imagination. There are a few good moments that save things a little, such as some bursts with blast beats on the track “Redshift” or some nice guitar ideas on “Noir”, but overall the album feels listless. Personally, I found it quite indifferent, an album that chases success through the trends of the era, sacrificing creativity.
