Warthrash return with No Light Shall Remain, a record that plants itself firmly in old‑school death/thrash, but with a more mature and careful approach than in the past. The band from Medellín has left behind the more chaotic riffing of its early years and presents a sound that’s steadier, heavier and more clearly death metal, without losing its thrash roots.
The album starts with 3–4 minute tracks, immediate and aggressive. “Sombras del Poder” immediately shows the band’s new identity: doubled vocals, fast passages, some melody in the second half and plenty of old‑school feeling. “Crucifixion” is one of the strongest points of the first half, with a clear structure and nice rhythmic buildup.
From “Wounds” onward, the record opens up. Here the most interesting ideas appear: tremolo melodies, more heavy/speed metal influences and more ambitious compositions. “Undefeated” has nice rhythmic development, although the double solo at the end goes a bit off the rails. “Ruins” continues in the same vein, with melodic riffs that mesh well with the faster moments.
The closing with “Hollow Existence” is one of the record’s best moments. Melodies, rock‑style solos and nice basslines give a more complete character to the album’s end.
The production is raw but clean, ideal for death/thrash. Felipe Mora’s cover art catches the eye and fits perfectly with the style. Although the first half of the record is more “samey” and less daring, the second half shows that Warthrash have things to say and can evolve without losing their old‑school identity.
An honest, powerful death/thrash record that will satisfy fans of the genre.
