REVIEW | Metal Territory
V srdci severskej temnoty doesn’t try to win you over — it grabs you by the throat and drags you into its cold. Immortal Hammer deliver an album that sounds like it was written in complete isolation, far from scenes, trends and “modern” productions. It’s raw black metal, but not sloppy; it’s raw, yet with a clear direction and an atmosphere built piece by piece.
The album opens with an instrumental that acts as a ritual entrance before the real assault begins. “Rád strážcov ohňa” and the title track “V srdci severskej temnoty” immediately show what the band wants to do: long compositions, frozen riffs and tempos that never rush, yet slowly suffocate you. There is nothing “polished” here — and that is the album’s weapon.
“Zimná noc” is one of the strongest moments, a track that slowly builds tension until it swallows you. The closing “Smrť je výsada života” is truly monumental: over ten minutes of dark, freezing atmosphere, with riffs that seem forged in snow and stone. It’s one of those tracks that need no speed to destroy you.
The production is raw, but not muddy. You hear everything — guitars scraping, drums striking like frozen bones, the voice coming like a scream from deep inside a forest. This is that kind of black metal that doesn’t try to impress; it simply exists, dark, steady and true.
Immortal Hammer deliver an album that honours the genre without copying it. They are more mature, more focused and stronger than ever. For those who love atmospheric, lengthy raw black metal, this record is genuinely excellent.
