REVIEW | Metal Territory

Scythe from Constanța arrive with Boiled Alive, a debut that plants itself firmly in late 80s/early 90s death metal, but with enough personality not to seem a mere copy. The band had shown its intentions on the 2024 demo, but here it presents a much tighter, cleaner and more professional version of its sound.

The album combines thrash‑death influences with raw, gore‑obsessed subject matter. The riffs have that characteristic movement that recalls early Necrophagia and Massacre, while at points more technical touches appear that bring Insanity or Ripping Corpse to mind. The band doesn’t just run — it builds tracks with rhythmic changes, thrash passages and death metal aggression.

“Liquified Entrails” opens with a thrash‑death disposition and immediately shows that Scythe have improved significantly since the demo. “Plastered in Phlegm” brings a Leprosy aesthetic, with tighter leads and better structure. “Necrophilic Corpse Orgies” is one of the most complete tracks, with nice variations and old‑school feeling.

The second half of the record includes renewed versions from the demo: “Boiled Alive”, “Tenebrous Decease” and others. They’re rawer and less adorned, but they mesh well with the new material and keep the old‑school atmosphere.

The production is clean but not overly polished — exactly as much as needed for the riffs to be heard without losing the filth of the genre. The mix has been done by people who have worked with The Chasm and Molder, and it shows.

Boiled Alive is a debut that shows Scythe have understood what old‑school death metal means: raw energy, proper riffing and an atmosphere that smells of the early 90s. It’s not perfect, but it’s honest, powerful and with plenty of moments that linger.
