Review
Winter Rites Of The Mountain Land present Κυν‑λακ‑αχ, a debut that stands firmly on Greek tradition and pagan black metal. The album’s name is a compound of the regions Kynouria, Laconia and Arcadia, while the lyrics of Lykaos Aigagros draw inspiration from myths, local stories and the natural landscape of the Peloponnese.
The album begins with a ritualistic intro that places the listener in the natural environment of the Greek countryside. From there on, the compositions move in fast, aggressive pagan black metal, with riffs that don’t chase excessive technicality but build atmosphere and storytelling. The voice of Lykaos Aigagros gives weight and character, while the stories it tells — such as the flooding of Lake Tsivlou in “Η ΛΙΜΝΗ” — mesh perfectly with the style.
The tracks work like small epic tableaux: battles of centaurs, forces of nature, mythical creatures and ancient rituals. The music moves between martial intensity and heavier, ritualistic moments, with bass and drums reinforcing the primordial element. “Η ΣΥΝΑΝΤΗΣΗ” stands out with a more inward, almost mystical mood, narrating the discovery of an ibex skull in the mountains of Arcadia — a personal story that becomes a ritual symbol.
The production is clean and supports the material, while the overall atmosphere takes the listener to Greek landscapes and myths. If there is one small drawback, it’s the slightly repetitive structure between the tracks. Even so, for a first album, Winter Rites Of The Mountain Land show that the Greek pagan black metal sound still has a lot to give.
