Unholy Redeemer are a multinational death metal quartet formed in 2023 by guitarist Steven Hull (Crucifire), drummer/bassist Jarro Raphael (Nocturnal Graves) and vocalist Jens Pederson (Cerekloth) — familiar names from the early-2010s underground. After the demo “A Fever to Dethrone All Kings” (2023), they return with their debut EP “Journey Beyond Death”, with Desecresy’s Tommi Grönqvist joining on bass.
Country: Multinational
Genre: Old School Death Metal / Death-Doom
For fans of: Incantation, Desecresy, Nocturnal Graves
The listen
The EP consists of five tracks written with precision down to the last note: mid-to-slow pummel rhythms, atmospheric “old school” death metal with references to early Florida death, the dark late-’90s Incantation and classic black/death. The title track “Journey Beyond Death” approaches the limits of death/doom, while “Carrion of the Gods” crawls like a tank with imposing slowness.
The sound design is dense and spacious, with Pederson’s roared vocals dominating at the top and plenty of rhythm guitars moving through the middle of the mix. The drumming prevails as the guiding force, but the bass isn’t lost — it gives weight to “Blazing Grave Cathedrals” and takes the spotlight on “Ever Drifting… They Wait.”
The production brings a bright, dark setting without losing the precision of the performances — a level of quality they should carry straight into their upcoming album. The EP’s great achievement isn’t so much its referential puzzle as the level of skill and the distinctive presence they manage track by track: a stoic morbidity that is missing from most of today’s “post-old school” death. Very high recommendation.
