Cannibal Corpse released their third album, “Tomb of the Mutilated”, on September 22, 1992 via Metal Blade — and cemented their reputation as one of the most violent and repulsive bands on the metal scene. For many it remains their best album, and Rock Hard ranked it at #278 of the 500 greatest metal records of all time.

The listen
Recorded at Morrisound in Tampa with Scott Burns at the controls, the album features clean production that brings out every riff within the extreme density. “Hammer Smashed Face” opens with one of the genre’s craziest and most unforgettable riffs, incredibly fast drums and a bass that crushes — and became so iconic that it was even played in the film “Ace Ventura.” “I Cum Blood” continues with incredible pulses and Chris Barnes’s most guttural vocals.
Barnes’s vocals are extremely guttural — the liner notes boast that “no electronic harmonizer was used on any vocal” — and his lyrics, full of necrophilia and sadism, are among the most extreme ever recorded. The cover art, by artist Vince Locke, was so shocking that it was censored in many countries, with alternative editions released in Germany, Australia and elsewhere.
“Addicted to Vaginal Skin,” “Entrails Ripped from a Virgin’s Cunt” and “Split Wide Open” complete a record that remains a cornerstone of brutal death metal. The balance between blast beats, downtuned guitars and the band’s trademark roar influenced countless acts — and “Tomb of the Mutilated” continues to be considered a reference point for the genre.
