REVIEW | Metal Territory

Üga Büga play exactly what you’d expect from a band with such a name: dirty riffs, intensity, groove and a raw energy that grabs you from the very first round. Valley of the Wolf is a record made for summer beers, heat, sweat and headbanging. It has that “primitive” feeling that hits you when a riff lands right and raises your eyebrows.

The band moves between sludge, stoner, grunge and southern rock without ever losing its character. The riffs build intensity gradually, the rhythms have weight and Calloway Jones delivers both the cleans and the harsh vocals. The shifts in style are among the record’s strongest points: “Divine Slaughter (Backyard Barbecue Bonanza)” suddenly throws in a salsa‑like rhythmic turn that works incredibly well, while calmer blues and jazz touches appear in “Valley of the Wolf”, “Ghost in the Diamond Cage” and “Revolting Power”.

“Earthsuckers” is the peak of the album. It starts with a downtuned chugging and explodes into a huge riff that builds to the burst at the four-minute mark. Jimmy Czywczynski keeps time with power and imagination, avoiding the monotony that often kills sludge releases. “Mötorhog” is a purebred headbanger, while small variations in the choruses of “Ghost in the Diamond Cage” keep the interest up to the end.

The album also has its weak spots. “The Nail that Binds” loses its pace due to awkward switches between clean and harsh vocals, while “The Sand Witch” tires with repeated lines. The closing “Revolting Power” tries to build something big, but never reaches the explosion you expect; the intensity drops instead of peaking.

Nevertheless, Valley of the Wolf is a record that does what it promises: it delivers riffs, groove, energy and a great summer mood. Üga Büga have personality, have humour and know how to write tracks that stick. A very strong stoner/sludge package.
