ALBUM REVIEW

RISABOV – Light Years Towards Impact

“Light Years Towards Impact”… Science fiction, existential anguish and human consciousness meet extreme metal through a notably mature compositional prism. The album was released independently on April 20, 2024, runs about 44 minutes and is the band’s second full work, following “Rise” from 2013.

From the short intro “Light Years Toward Impacts”, it becomes clear that Risabov don’t simply want to write nine songs. They want to tell a story. The intro works like the opening of a science fiction film, creating a sense of loneliness and vast space, before the band unleashes the first real blow.

“Sanction” arrives with aggression and groove, combining death and thrash influences without being confined to any particular idiom. The guitars have excellent weight, the drums maintain constant intensity and the vocals ideally serve the dark style, without excess.

On “Dreaming Infinity” Risabov prove how important a role atmosphere plays in their music. Here the progressive structures become more evident, with constant shifts in dynamics and a composition that evolves organically instead of relying on the classic verse-chorus pattern.

“Predator” is perhaps the album’s most direct track. The groove is addictive, the riffs recall moments of contemporary European extreme metal, while the production lets every instrument breathe without losing the aggression.

From there, essentially the “heart” of the album begins.

The seven-minute “What If Time (Is Just A Thing)” is one of the album’s top moments. It’s not simply a long song. It’s a composition that explores different moods, moving from calm, almost ambient points to explosions of heaviness and intensity. The themes around time and human perception are conveyed excellently musically, not only lyrically.

Even more ambitious is “Directive 4”, where the progressive explorations peak. Complex changes, atmospheric passages, heavy riffs and excellent orchestration create a composition that’s hard to forget.

“Static Sunset” works as a breath before the finale, while still maintaining the dark aesthetic that runs through the entire album.

The last two compositions, “Inner State” and “Outer State”, ideally complete the concept. Like two sides of the same reality, they balance between the inner world and the unknown of the universe, building a stunning close that leaves the listener to process what came before.

Where Risabov truly stand out is in the way they combine their influences. Death metal, progressive metal, sludge, post-metal and cinematic textures coexist without ever sounding manufactured or affected. The references to bands like Gojira, The Ocean, Cult of Luna and Mastodon are evident on an aesthetic level, but Risabov don’t attempt to copy anyone. They have shaped their own character based more on creating atmosphere than on displaying technique.

The production is yet another strong card of the album. Kostas Katsantonis‘s mix keeps an ideal balance between clarity and raw power, while Alan Douches‘s mastering offers volume without sacrificing the naturalness of the sound. The result sounds modern, but at the same time retains that old-school extreme metal feeling that many albums of the era have lost.

What impresses most is the coherence. There are no fillers or compositions that exist simply to pad the runtime. Everything serves the concept and contributes to creating a complete musical journey.

“Light Years Towards Impact” is not an album intended for superficial listening. It requires concentration, time and the willingness to surrender to the world it creates. And the more you return to it, the more details you discover. This is perhaps also Risabov’s greatest achievement: they created an album that isn’t exhausted on the first listens, but continues to evolve in the listener’s mind.

At a time when many releases sound disposable, Risabov present a work with personality, vision and real artistic ambition. “Light Years Toward Impact” isn’t just another Greek metal album; it’s one of the most complete progressive extreme metal releases of recent years and proof that the Greek underground continues to produce music of international standards.
