Amon Amarth return with The Allfather Awakens, a ten-track epic out on October 2 via Metal Blade Records. The new album continues the tradition of the Swedish Viking metal titans, full of epic stories, conflicts, sacrifices and the constant presence of Oden, the “Allfather”, who has been the band’s thematic axis since their earliest steps.
The new single: “Gjallarhorn”
After the first acoustic track of their career, Upphaf, Amon Amarth present the album’s opening track, “Gjallarhorn” — a classic, rousing Amon Amarth track with raised tempo, an epic chorus and riffs destined to become a future live staple.
The song depicts the myth of Oden’s sacrifice at Mímisbrunnr, the Well of Wisdom, where the god sacrificed his eye to gain knowledge beyond the limits of mortals.
The making of the album
The Allfather Awakens is the band’s 13th album and was written with a new approach: – Amon Amarth began composing while on tour, – they recorded one song at a time, fully completing each track before moving to the next, – the recordings took place in two phases at Jacob Hansen‘s studio in Denmark (Spring 2025 & March 2026), – guitar-wise, the band returned to a more “traditional” sound, leaving behind the 5150 and going back to Marshall.
Olavi Mikkonen explains: “We made each song as good as it could be. Only when it was completely finished did we start the next one.”
Themes & inspiration
The album is not a concept, but a collection of historically inspired stories around Oden and the world of the Norse sagas. Titles like “Eight Legs of Thunder”, “Kvasir’s Blood”, “Die With a War Cry”, “Raven God” and “Oden’s Hunt” continue the band’s epic tradition.
The cover is the work of Tom Thiel, creator of seven Amon Amarth covers.
The legacy of Amon Amarth
With over 30 years of activity, Amon Amarth have conquered: – #1 spots on the German charts with Jomsviking, Berserker, The Great Heathen Army, – sold‑out shows at The Forum (LA) and Red Rocks (Denver), – headline appearances at Wacken, Bloodstock, Download, Summer Breeze, – worldwide tours with Slayer, Guns N’ Roses, Foo Fighters, Pantera, – massive appeal to audiences from kids to 60+, – cultural influence with the legendary Viking Row, which now appears even in… World Cup crowds.
In 2026 the band starts a big North American tour with Dethklok and Castle Rat, while in the fall they will present a new stage production inspired by Oden’s Golden Hall.
