Napalm Death singer Mark «Barney» Greenway says he didn’t expect such an intense reaction to the band’s appearance on NPR Music’s «Tiny Desk» series, since he expected fans would see it as something novel.
In July 2026 the British grindcore band became the first group of the genre ever booked on the series, which is filmed behind a desk at NPR’s offices in Washington and has hosted everyone from rock and hip-hop to soul, folk and jazz.
Speaking to «Amped! TV» (as reported by Blabbermouth), he explained why the appearance was especially meaningful to him: public broadcasting is under pressure from big private media, and he was glad to add even their own small contribution. The booking took a while, since it was supposed to happen on their previous tour already.
As for the audience’s reaction, he said he was speechless. He expected an appearance that would feel like a special moment for the fans, but people responded far more warmly. His explanation was simple: he went on stage and did what he always does, which is shout.
He had told the crowd that they support public broadcasting, which is under attack both in Britain and the US. The appearance was curated by NPR Music producer Lars Gotrich, who had said that the first grindcore group at that desk had to be the founders of the genre.
Eight songs were played, from «Instinct Of Survival» to «You Suffer», which holds the Guinness record for the shortest song ever released, and a mosh pit broke out in the office. Matt Sheridan played bass.
More on the same side of metal: Bulgaria: 48 concerts and two festivals through July 2027.
Napalm Death in 2026
The group formed in 1981 in Meriden, near Birmingham, with none of the original members still in the lineup. Greenway and bassist Shane Embury hold the core together, with Embury staying off touring due to health problems, including pancreatitis, and Adam Clarkson filling in as he has since 2023. Earlier in the year Napalm Death released «Savage Imperial Death March» with the Melvins, and Embury has said the next studio album may not arrive until late 2027.
