The legendary Norwegians Mayhem, the undisputed pioneers of Scandinavian Black Metal, return with their new work, “Liturgy Of Death”. Mayhem remain consistent in creating frozen, otherworldly soundscapes, combining the traditional, raw black metal aesthetic of the 90s with the modern technical maturity that characterizes their recent work, this time tackling the philosophy and inevitability of death.

REVIEW : Someone once said that Mayhem’s career is not a simple path, but an entire anthology, and “Liturgy of Death” comes to confirm that triumphantly. The band is in demonic form. Attila gives it everything, moving from bestial growls to operatic, almost majestic clean vocals (as on the stunning “Despair”), while the rhythm section simply sows havoc. Hellhammer delivers seminars in blast beats, Necrobutcher hits mercilessly with his bass, and the guitar duo Teloch/Ghul throws razor blades with riffs that take you straight to the second wave of Norwegian black metal. All of this peaks on “The Sentence of Absolution”, perhaps one of the most chaotic and hypnotic closings they have ever written.
Production-wise, even though we’re talking about an extreme sonic assault lasting 49 minutes, the mix leaves room for every instrument to breathe. It’s an incredibly dense record full of detail, and if you listen to it superficially you might miss its subtle tricks. Personally, I’ll tell you straight: it demands multiple, careful listens to appreciate its dizzying ambition. Mayhem prove once again why they are the absolute benchmark of the scene. They don’t rest on their laurels, they don’t cut corners, and they deliver a record that makes you hit replay obsessively. Drop your prejudices and surrender to their liturgy!
