Johan Hegg: Amon Amarth left a recorded song off an album for the first time | Metal Territory

Johan Hegg revealed that Amon Amarth recorded one more song than ended up on their new album «The Allfather Awakens» and that it’s the first time they’ve left a complete recording behind. The singer spoke to Thomas Moser of German radio Rock Antenne, shortly before the record’s release on October 2 by Metal Blade.

Responding to a remark that the band doesn’t seem to struggle to produce strong material, Hegg pushed back: «That’s far from the truth.» He explained that Amon Amarth don’t write music they don’t believe will make the record — «if the record has ten songs, we wrote ten, not twelve, not fifteen». This year, though, he said, they recorded eleven: «There was one song we felt had potential, but it didn’t come out the way we wanted. We put it aside for now. And it’s a first — that’s never happened before.»

In the same interview he admitted that before every release the anxiety remains, with the answer «both yes and no»: if it were up to him, he said, he’d give the songs to the audience the moment the studio door closes, since the wait becomes almost torturous when he feels this good about a record.

The band’s lineup remains the same: Hegg on vocals, Olavi Mikkonen and Johan Söderberg on guitars, Ted Lundström on bass and Jocke Wallgren on drums. «The Allfather Awakens» includes ten tracks: «Gjallarhorn», «Eight Legs Of Thunder», «Kvasir’s Blood», «We Rule The Waves», «Upphaf», «Die With A War Cry», «Raven God», «The Allfather Awakes», «Oden’s Hunt» and «Ascending Like An Eagle».

To wrap up

The song left aside isn’t… lost for good. If it finds its way, we’ll hear about it in the band’s next releases.
