For fans of: Necrophagist, Suffocation Their sound moves in the waters of Necrophagist and Suffocation: fast blast beats, dense riffs and extreme vocals by Skyler Nohrenberg. Beside him, Allen Gengerich on guitars and Michael Ranne on drums keep the material tight even at its most technical moments. There are moments that stand out. “Ophidian Maw” starts heavy and breaks into groovier passages, “Abyssal Hymn II” builds on a slow motif before attacking, while “Stone Shepherd” hides an impressive, sweepy solo. “Stygian Sea” is the album’s most interesting point: a dark, almost jazzy passage with psychedelic guitar arpeggios that gives the album a different shade, even if its placement at the end makes it feel like a moment that isn’t taken any further. These moments give reason to come back, yet they don’t change the overall picture: “Odyssean” is predictable within its complexity. The riffs, the drums and the vocals are everywhere and executed with skill — which is why it doesn’t tire you — but the material stays within a sound you recognize from the first listen. The snare, on some tracks, feels off: against the clean, compressed mix of the other instruments it sounds hollow and papery. Our take “Odyssean” is a well-crafted technical death metal album, with moments that show the band has the tools. But it lacks that journey you don’t know in advance — and when an album is inspired by the Odyssey, the expectation is inevitably greater.
