Emptiness – Nowhere Speaks
The Belgian Emptiness return with “Nowhere Speaks”, a record that doesn’t play by the classic rules of Black or Death Metal. Here everything is darker, dirtier and stranger, with the band creating an atmosphere that pulls you into it rather than letting you easily follow the tracks.
The album was recorded mainly live in the studio and that shows in the sound. The guitars have a rough feel, the bass often takes a leading role and the drums don’t always follow the usual Black Metal forms. The compositions feel more like continuous dark journeys, where a riff is born, changes and gives way to the next.

“Nowhere Speaks” is one of the tracks that best shows this logic, while “Words to Wind” brings in more atmospheric and experimental elements. Jérémie Bezier’s voice is deep, distorted and often gets lost in the mix. It is not an easy vocal approach, but it fits perfectly with the claustrophobic mood of the record.
“All for Nothing” is perhaps the strongest moment, as it leaves a little more room for emotion and creates a very nice closing.
“Nowhere Speaks” is not an album for those looking for easy riffs and clear choruses. It is strange, dark and quite demanding, but that is exactly where its charm lies. Emptiness create a sound that feels more like a dark journey than a traditional metal album.
