Downfall of Nur return after more than ten years and bring with them a record that demands patience, time and a mood for sinking into dark, slow-moving landscapes. And the Firmament Will Burn to Quench the Pain of This Earth is an album that doesn’t come to you — you have to go to it.
With long-lasting tracks, cold vocals and guitars moving through frozen, defensive melodies, the record builds an atmosphere that feels more like a natural phenomenon than music.

Blast beats and the more aggressive moments exist, but they aren’t the core. Most of the record moves in slow, atmospheric flows, where melodies appear gradually, as if they had always been there. In “Beyond the Transcendent Darkness”, the guitar that enters in the fifth minute is like a prayer bent under its own weight. That sense of the inevitable is one of the album’s strongest points.
There are also vocal touches that add depth: spoken-word passages in “Underground Halls of the Oldest Goddess Stronghold”, as well as the voice of an elderly woman in the interludes, acting like a ghost inside the record’s fog. They don’t explain a story; they simply hover over the music and reinforce the mystical tone.
The album’s biggest drawback is its length. With 79 minutes in total and three tracks over 14 minutes, the experience becomes tiring. By the time you reach the 20-minute finale, the album has already said everything it wants to say. The excessive atmosphere dulls the intensity of the strongest moments and makes some peaks get lost in the fog.
Nevertheless, Firmament is a record that doesn’t try to be easy or approachable. It’s austere, slow and full of weight. For those who love atmospheric black metal and want to get lost in a world that flows like a tide, the record will work. For the rest, it may be a difficult experience.
