Vocalist Davey Havok, drummer and backing vocalist Adam Carson, bassist, backing vocalist and keyboardist Hunter Burgan, and guitarist, backing vocalist and keyboardist Jade Puget have been members since 1998. The only remaining original members are Havok and Carson. They started out as a hardcore punk band and then explored a variety of genres, such as horror punk, post-hardcore, emo, alternative rock and gothic rock. Twelve studio albums, eleven EPs, one live album and one DVD have been released by AFI . With their fifth album, “The Art of Drowning” (2000), which reached No. 174 on the Billboard 200, the band found significant commercial success for the first time.
“Sing the Sorrow” (2003), their sixth album, which reached No. five on the Billboard 200 and stayed on the chart for 51 weeks, was their next big success. The hit singles ” Girl’s Not Grey ” and ” Silver and Cold “, both of which reached No. seven on America’s Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart in 2003, helped promote the album. Also released as a single, ” The Leaving Song Pt. II” reached No. 16 on the chart. With over 1.26 million copies sold as of September 2009, “Sing the Sorrow” is AFI‘s best-selling album and was certified Platinum by the RIAA in 2006.
