PRESS RELEASE : Texas’ Malconstruct return with their third full-length album, “Entanglement”. The U.S. band, active since 2013, serves up modern, groovy death metal. The record, released via Glorp Records, consists of 7 tracks with a total runtime of 25 minutes, offering a barrage of heavy, asymmetric riffs and death metal aggression. With an emphasis on the technical side and on rhythmic games, the quartet delivers work packed with massive guitars and distinctive harsh vocals.

Tracklist :

  • Misery Epoch
  • Mutual Consumption
  • The Vacuous Nothing
  • Amalgamate
  • The Fly
  • I Am All That I Am Not

REVIEW : Let’s be honest, the right riff is the backbone of extreme sound. Texas’ Malconstruct know this well and on “Entanglement” they throw all their weight behind the groove. The moment the opening “Misery Epoch” kicks in you feel a strong Gojira aesthetic hitting you in the head and the headbanging comes effortlessly. However, as the album goes on, this constant repetition of the “stop-start” formula starts to wear thin. The band stacks one heavy riff on top of another, often forgetting to give the tracks a natural flow and cohesion, so that somewhere in the middle the record becomes monotonous.

Where the album really suffers is in the absence of atmosphere and guitar solos that would break this monotony and give some breathing room. Fortunately, there are a few bright exceptions, like the clean guitar passages in “Mutual Consumption” or the closing of the record with “I Am All That I Am Not”. The latter is by far their most dynamic and interesting moment, slowing the pace down in an excellent way. Overall, if you’re just looking for scattered, heavy death metal riffs, you’ll find things to enjoy. But if you’re expecting a complete progressive death metal album with a beginning, middle and end, you’ll probably be left wanting.
