«The Great Mass» is Septicflesh‘s eighth record. It came out on April 18, 2011 via Season of Mist, was recorded from July to September 2010 at Devasoundz Studios in Athens and at Studio Abyss in Ludvika, Sweden, and runs 43 minutes.
Country: Greece
Genre: Symphonic death metal
For fans of: Rotting Christ, Necromantia, Nightfall
The symphonic parts were played by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, with the music credited to the band and the lyrics by Sotiris Vayenas. The record builds on «Communion» but goes further: longer compositions, more vocals, orchestral passages that work as standalone tracks.
The first single was «The Vampire from Nazareth» in 2010, before the album’s release, and it showed early on where the record was heading. «The Great Mass» entered the French charts at number 132, giving the band the biggest commercial recognition it had up to then in Europe.
Our take
It’s the record that made Septicflesh a name on the European scene and at the same time their most «cinematic» work. Anyone coming from «Communion» finds here the same idea written with greater confidence.
