Green Lung release on September 11 through Nuclear Blast Records their new record «Necropolitan». It is an album that is a hymn to the music of the 70s, with the sound of old heavy metal and doom, but with one foot in the future.
Country: United Kingdom
Genre: Stoner Doom / Occult Rock
For fans of: Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple
The record opens with «Open the Hellmouth», which recalls the proto metal of the 70s and wins immediately. Tom Templar’s voice recalls Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, while the band has clear influences from Black Sabbath. Because of the keyboards, the sound also approaches Uriah Heep: «Black Magick Radio» is the most characteristic example, with the keys taking the reins.
The title «Necropolitan» has an interesting history: it comes from the seven garden-cemeteries that surround the city, all built in the Victorian era to solve the problem of the overflowing church graveyards. These cemeteries were full of mausoleums, obelisks and marble sarcophagi, but from the late 60s they were abandoned and became ruins full of ivy. They are the record’s natural setting and a symbol of the band’s central theme: the end of humanity before nature.
The tracklist has nine tracks: «Open the Hellmouth», «Dance to the Grave», «Black Magick Radio», «Necropolitan Line», «Evil in this House», «Together in Death», «Ozymandias», «Alostrael (Be My Babalon)» and «To the Gallows Born». The sound may seem a bit old-fashioned to some, but Green Lung have interesting ideas and the record is very good, as the first listen also notes.
