Tyrannus return with Mournhold, their second full‑length, and deliver an album that combines blackened death, thrash and a clear Lovecraftian aesthetic. The album opens with dark synth and drops straight into tremolo riffs, diminished harmonies and chord passages that give the first taste of the style: fast, dirty, dark.
There are plenty of d‑beat passages, which break up the speed and give a punk‑brash energy. Tyrannus slow down with doomy riffs, let the notes “hang” and build atmosphere before re‑entering tremolo and thrash tempos. The bass is clearly audible in places, especially in the intro of the fourth track, which adds weight and volume.
Clean guitars appear often, with somber and ominous harmonies that act as brief breaths before the barbarity returns. There are whammy bar accents, trills between the thrash riffs, palm‑muted hits and breakdowns that make the record heavier and “chunkier”. The solos are mostly atmospheric and shreddy, with dive bombs that add an old‑school touch.
“Reignfall” is one of the strongest tracks on the record: thrashy riffs that can stand alone, groovy tremolos that force you to nod your head, chuggy harmonies and a shreddy solo. The vocals move between high screams, growls, spoken word and shouts, giving variety and intensity. The transitions have small pauses that let the sound “breathe”, which makes the result heavier.
On the title track “Mournhold”, the solos don’t stop — they continue with intensity until they close with feedback, giving an atmospheric exit. The last track is thrashy, melodic and works as an epic closer: bouncy tremolo riffs, sliding power chords and continuous harmonies that build to a climax.
Mournhold is a record full of dirt, energy and Lovecraftian darkness. If you love blackened death/thrash with a dissonant style, tremolo assault and thrash filth, Tyrannus deliver one of the strongest albums of the year. A gem.
