Static Abyss — the duo of legends Chris Reifert (Autopsy, ex-Death) and Greg Wilkinson (Deathgrave, Brainoil) — return with their third album The Dying Hunt, out on August 28, 2026 through Peaceville. On this release the band is joined on drums by Chad Gailey (Necrot, Mortuous), giving their sound an even stronger and tighter punch.
Static Abyss were born in early 2021 as a parallel project during the pandemic pause. After the debut “Labyrinth of Veins” (2022) and “Aborted From Reality” (2023), The Dying Hunt is their third record and their most multifaceted so far. The production took place at Earhammer Studios in Oakland, with Wilkinson handling recording, mixing and mastering — and it is the most “polished” of the bunch, without however losing the wild, spontaneous energy that characterizes them.
Musically, the record sinks the listener into a dirty, paranoid landscape where brutal death shaping meets doom and crust elements. The opener “Skull Blasted” comes in straight with their signature — fast, messy and aggressive — while the title track “The Dying Hunt” is the key track that ties doom, death and grind together with Reifert’s clearest “crazy” vocals. Further on, “Lobotomized At Last” and “Bleeding In The Fog” show their more melodic, hypnotic side, while the closer “Darkness At The End Of The Light” pulls the sound into long, surreal passages. With 11 tracks, The Dying Hunt is a nightmarish downhill ride for fans of the harsh sound — and one of Peaceville’s most interesting releases this year.
