The debut EP “Blood Conscript” by the Americans Sev Lezu is one of those releases that don’t ask for your attention — they simply seize it. A trio that combines melodic black metal, death and grindcore, with a result that sounds at once “dirty” and perfectly put together.
Country: USA
Genre: Melodic Black Metal / Deathgrind
For fans of: Dissection, Sargeist, Death, Terrorizer
Sev Lezu formed in 2022 by singer/drummer Sasha Stroud (also in Belexum and Onw), aiming to alchemize the refined feeling of Scandinavian melodic black metal with the rhythms of classic deathgrind. A little later the core trio was completed with guitarist Melissa Moore (Sonja, ex-Rumpelstiltskin Grinder) and bassist Funeralwhore (Manat). The EP contains five songs and two interludes, and shows in detail their unique combination: moderately complex melodicism and fast black-thrashing aggression.
The sound
On paper, “grinding melodic black metal” might recall Niden Div. 187, but in the hands of Sev Lezu it is something far more cohesive. Stroud evokes Dissection and early Sargeist on vocals, while the drums borrow from later Death and Terrorizer. The tracks run around 3–4 minutes and roll along in explosive bursts. The opener “The Stillborn” is perhaps the most complete sample, while “Corpse Step” (co-written with former Impiety guitarist Mia Priest) extends the melodic language into a dark, dancing streak.
The following tracks bring out Moore’s more technical, spiraling hand — especially the title track “Blood Conscript” and “Revenge”. The only objection is the interlude “The Ritual of Bone and Blade”, whose placement interrupts the flow of the listen. Overall, the band offers a “black thrashing melodic black metal” that benefits from repeated listens, with each track asking for one more pass.
Sev Lezu – Blood Conscript
The cover, by Tara Atefi, recalls something like the missteps below Helm’s Deep — and reinforces even more the first impression of a record that stands out amid the pile of contemporary, riff-less melodic black metal releases. A high recommendation for those who love the genre.
